Shailene Woodley portrayed Mary Jane Watson in the The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Trivia[]

  • Elena Satine had campaigned for the role for the first film.
  • On March 31, 2014, Woodley said she was unsure she wanted to be in the third film as Mary Jane, due to commitments with the Divergent film series.
  • Although she was offered a small role in the film, Woodley was supposed to play a much bigger one in its sequel. Her role was ultimately cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 because the filmmakers felt there were too many characters and wanted to streamline the film, whilst also providing greater focus on the Peter/Gwen relationship. Despite this, a silhouette of her head could still be seen briefly during the Rhino's rampage in the film's ending.
  • Director Marc Webb and screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci stated that if Woodley agreed to return as Mary Jane, she would be present in the two-part Sinister Six spin-off film and cameo in the Venom and Black Cat films as well, with MJ and Peter's relationship growing from ASM3 onwards and helping him come to terms with Gwen Stacy's death and eventually become romantic. They all even hoped this would culminate in them getting married by The Amazing Spider-Man 4, something supported by Andrew Garfield.
  • Garfield has also stated, in light of the his incarnation's inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home an and the overwhelming fan response and movement for The Amazing Spider-Man 3's release, he'd love for Woodley to return if it ever came to be so that her version of Mary Jane could gain a proper introduction, feeling that amongst all the drawbacks of working on the second film, she was treated the worst.
  • Shailene Woodley worked again with Felicity Jones in The Last Letter from Your Lover.
  • Shailene Woodley will work with Dane DeHaan again in Dumb Money.
